YouTube Punch EQ is a lightweight real-time audio equalizer built specifically for YouTube and YouTube Music.

It processes audio directly inside Firefox using the Web Audio API, allowing you to shape the sound of videos and music without changing the audio of other applications on your system.

The extension is designed to stay simple: no account, no telemetry, no external services, no unnecessary features. Just a responsive equalizer for YouTube.

INSTANT AUDIO PROCESSING

YouTube is a single-page application and frequently changes videos without performing a traditional page reload.

Some browser equalizers therefore take noticeable time before they detect a new song or media element. This can result in the first seconds of a song playing without EQ.

YouTube Punch EQ was designed specifically to avoid this.

The extension starts monitoring YouTube as soon as the document begins loading and reacts immediately when new video or audio elements appear.

It uses multiple detection mechanisms, including DOM observation, media playback events and YouTube navigation events. A periodic scan exists only as a fallback.

This allows the equalizer to remain active when:

• opening a video from the YouTube homepage
• switching between videos
• playing automatically generated YouTube mixes
• advancing to the next song
• navigating through YouTube Music
• using playlists
• changing pages without a full browser reload

AUDIO PROCESSING

When enabled, the audio path is approximately:

YouTube audio
→ Preamp
→ 80 Hz Bass Shelf
→ 125 Hz
→ 250 Hz
→ 500 Hz
→ 1 kHz
→ 2 kHz
→ 4 kHz
→ 8 kHz
→ 16 kHz
→ Firefox audio output

A separate dry audio path is maintained for bypass mode, so disabling the EQ gives you the original unfiltered signal instead of simply resetting every EQ band to zero.

PREAMP

Boosting several frequency bands can cause the resulting digital signal to exceed its available headroom and produce clipping.

The dedicated preamp allows the overall signal level to be reduced before EQ processing.

For example, a bass-heavy preset may use a negative preamp value while significantly boosting low frequencies. This provides stronger bass while retaining additional headroom.

BASS CONTROL

In addition to the normal EQ bands, YouTube Punch EQ includes a dedicated low-shelf filter centered around 80 Hz.

Unlike simply boosting a single narrow frequency band, the low-shelf filter raises or lowers the lower-frequency region as a whole.

This makes it particularly useful for adding weight, punch and low-end presence to music without requiring extreme individual EQ settings.

BUILT-IN PRESETS

YouTube Punch EQ includes several starting points for different listening preferences.

Flat:
No EQ coloration.

Heavy / Punch:
Designed to add low-end impact and definition while retaining clarity. This is also the default preset.

Rock:
A balanced preset intended for guitars, drums and vocals.

Deep Bass:
A stronger low-frequency emphasis for music where additional bass presence is desired.

All controls can be adjusted manually, and custom settings can be stored as your own presets.

YOUTUBE MUSIC SUPPORT

YouTube Music is supported directly alongside regular YouTube.

The same equalizer settings and presets are shared between both websites, so you can move between YouTube and YouTube Music without maintaining separate configurations.

LOCAL AND PRIVATE

All audio processing happens locally inside Firefox.

YouTube Punch EQ does not:

• collect listening history
• collect browsing history
• send analytics
• use telemetry
• require an account
• connect to an external server
• upload audio
• transmit EQ settings

Your settings and custom presets are stored locally using Firefox extension storage.

OUTPUT DEVICES

The equalizer operates before Firefox sends the processed audio to the final system output.

This means changing between speakers, headphones or another Windows audio output does not require the EQ to reconnect to the hardware.

The equalizer remains part of the Firefox audio path.

SCOPE

YouTube Punch EQ intentionally focuses on YouTube and YouTube Music instead of applying a system-wide equalizer.

This makes it useful if you want stronger bass or a different sound profile for YouTube while leaving games, Discord, media players and other applications untouched.

A small shadow copy of the active EQ settings is kept in local page storage to allow immediate startup; Firefox extension storage remains authoritative.
