Privacy Policy

This policy applies to the “What is that?” extension for Firefox and Chrome. The extension helps explain text that you select on a webpage. The developer does not operate a server that receives your settings, API keys, selected text, or AI requests. The extension does not use analytics or tracking.
Information stored in your browser

The extension stores your selected AI provider, model, response language, quick-action preference, and provider API keys in the browser’s local extension storage. This information stays in your browser and is not sent to the extension developer.
Information sent to AI providers

When you request an explanation, the selected webpage text and an instruction to explain it are sent from your browser to the AI provider you chose. For providers that require authentication, the provider API key is sent to that provider with the request. When you explicitly fetch the provider’s model list in Settings, the extension also sends the API key and model-list request to that provider. The extension developer does not receive these requests or data.

If you choose Ollama, model-list requests and explanation requests are sent to the Ollama server on your device at localhost:11434. Ollama does not require an API key in this extension.

Remote AI providers process data under their own privacy policies and retention practices. Review the policies of the provider you choose. API use may be subject to that provider’s billing and rate limits.
Webpage access

The extension runs a content script on webpages to detect selected text and display its optional quick-action icon. Selection is handled in your browser. Text is sent to an AI provider only after you activate an explanation action, such as clicking the icon or using the extension’s context menu or popup.
Retention and deletion

Settings and API keys remain in local extension storage until you change or clear them, remove the extension, or clear the browser’s extension data. The extension does not keep a copy of your selected text or provider responses. A remote provider may retain requests according to its own policies.
