UAIE™: Universal Adaptive Interface Engine
UAIE is a free accessibility extension for the modern web. Install it, select text on any page, and UAIE will read it aloud, convert it into Grade 2 UEB Braille, look up the sign-language equivalent, export it to DAISY, or simplify it into plain language. One adaptive engine. Four pedagogical clusters. Works on any website.

A note on the install prompt
When you install UAIE, your browser will show a permission notice saying the extension can read and change data on the websites you visit. This is standard for any accessibility extension that transforms page content, and it is why UAIE needs the permission: the engine reads the text you select in order to convert it into speech, Grade 2 UEB Braille, sign language, DAISY, plain language, and AAC symbols. In the free tier, no page data leaves your browser. Nothing you read is transmitted, stored, or sold.

What UAIE does
UAIE is a reading assistant, a plain-language rewriter, a Grade 2 Braille converter, a sign-language extension, and a website simplifier folded into a single adaptive engine. Features include:
• Free text to speech with adjustable rate, voice, and language.
• Read aloud for dyslexia, with distraction dimming and focus mode built on Sweller’s cognitive load theory.
• Plain-language adaptation across six escalating levels. L1 and L2 are unlocked in the free tier; L3 to L6 unlock when you supply your own Anthropic API key.
• Grade 2 UEB Braille conversion for text of any length, following the Unified English Braille standard.
• Sign-language overlay in BSL, ASL, ISL, and UAIE Sign, with seventy-two curated gestures.
• DAISY export in DAISY 2.02 talking-book format.
• AAC symbols for non-verbal users.
• Multiple Intelligences reformatter across the eight Gardner intelligences: linguistic, logical, spatial, kinaesthetic, musical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and naturalist.
• Cognitive load reducer with distraction dimming, chunking, and focus mode.
• Translation across supported languages, using your own Anthropic API key.

Who UAIE is for
Students with dyslexia who need a reading assistant, decoding support, and simplified reading. Learners with visual impairment who work in Grade 2 UEB Braille or DAISY. Deaf and hard-of-hearing users who work in sign language. Non-verbal users of AAC symbols. Teachers running SEN classroom sessions. SENCO, IEP support, and Disability Services teams supporting mixed-need classrooms. Anyone who finds standard web content cognitively overloading and wants an accessibility extension that adapts the page rather than replacing the browser.
A companion to your existing assistive technology
UAIE is not a screen reader. It is designed to work alongside JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. For learners who cannot use a full screen reader, UAIE offers a lighter screen reader alternative for many everyday reading tasks: selective text-to-speech, on-demand Braille conversion, and plain-language simplification, without the learning curve of a full screen-reader environment.

Free and unlocked tiers
Tier 1 is genuinely free and works standalone with no account and no API key: free text to speech, Grade 2 Braille converter, sign-language extension lookup, DAISY export, AAC symbols, cognitive load reducer, and basic plain-language rewriter. Tier 2 unlocks higher-level plain-language rewrites, the Multiple Intelligences reformatter, and translation using your own Anthropic API key. No account is required. No telemetry beyond the browser’s standard extension error reporting. No data is sold.

Standards and provenance
UAIE is self-certified against WCAG 2.2 AA. Its pedagogical architecture draws on Sweller’s cognitive load theory (1988), Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences (1983), Anderson and Krathwohl’s revised Bloom’s taxonomy (2001), and CAST’s Universal Design for Learning, extended through Universal Design for Inclusive Learning (UDIL), Fiza Pathan’s theoretical framework relocating UDL from the curriculum layer to the interface layer.

For schools and institutions
The consumer extension is a demonstration surface. A separate self-hosted institutional product, the UAIE School Platform, provides classes, students, assignments, grading, licence-key gating, and IB (PYP, MYP, DP) and IGCSE-ready foundations.
