Latest version
Version 2.0.0
Released Sep 23, 2026 - 112.08 KBWorks with firefox 140.0 and later, android 142.0 and laterFree Search Switcher 2.0.0 makes Firefox Desktop the primary target while retaining Firefox for Android support.
What's new:
- A desktop toolbar popup with an enable/disable switch, both preferred-engine selectors, and access to Settings. Popup changes save immediately.
- Global and per-site controls for the seven supported search engines. These control where FSS appears; all engines remain available as destinations.
- A Reload page action when an open search page needs to apply saved settings. Undoing a toggle before reloading clears an unnecessary warning.
- Save changes and Cancel in full Settings. Preferences, site switches, custom engines, and icon URLs stay in a draft until saved.
- Protection for unsaved edits when leaving Settings or receiving changes from another tab or browser sync.
- Browser-native configuration sync where supported and enabled. Firefox for Android does not synchronize extension settings with Desktop Firefox.
- Optional HTTPS icon URLs for custom engines, with first-letter fallback if an image is unavailable.
- Improved light/dark layouts, corrected desktop popup sizing, and updated documentation.
Upgrading:
Your preferred engines, custom engines, and their order are preserved. Global and site controls default to enabled. Old uploaded icons are removed, but their engines remain available; add an HTTPS Icon URL to replace them.
Query transfer, Unicode, search modes, homepage fallback, and custom destinations remain supported. Android continues to use full Settings as its main configuration interface.
Privacy:
No analytics, telemetry, tracking, accounts, or developer-operated servers. Sync contains configuration only, never queries or browsing history. Only icon URL strings are stored; the browser may contact the external image host when displaying an icon. FSS does not upload or proxy images.Source code released under MIT License
Older versions
Version 1.0.0
Released Sep 4, 2026 - 96.32 KBWorks with firefox 140.0 and later, android 142.0 and laterFree Search Switcher now preserves your search mode when switching engines, not just your query.
New in 1.0.0:
- Switching engines while viewing Images, Videos, News, Maps, or Shopping results now opens the same mode on the destination engine, when it supports one.
- Falls back automatically to a normal web search when the destination has no equivalent mode - never an empty search.
- Works across all seven built-in engines: Ecosia, Startpage, DuckDuckGo, Qwant, Bing, Brave, and Google.
- No new permissions were added. Nothing new is stored or sent anywhere - only the query and mode you're already switching with.
