Carmen Monitor by Backgrounder INC

Carmen Monitor detects scams and phishing in the messages you read and the websites you visit.

Everything below serves that one purpose. Carmen Monitor works with a Backgrounder account. Once you sign in, it checks the web pages you open and, on the sites you choose, the messages you read. It tells you when something looks like a scam: a fake delivery notice, a phishing link, someone impersonating your bank or your boss, a marketplace payment trick.

HOW IT DOES THAT
- Page safety: while you are signed in, the address of the page in your active tab is checked with Backgrounder's scam-analysis service, and Carmen warns you if the page is dangerous. Well-known safe sites, sites you allow, browser pages and local or private-network addresses are not checked.
- Messages on sites you turn on: Gmail, Outlook, Facebook and Messenger, Slack, X (Twitter), WhatsApp Web, Microsoft Teams, Google Messages, Discord, TikTok, Snapchat, Reddit and LinkedIn. Every site starts switched off. Message content is sent automatically only after you turn on automatic checks.
- Ask Carmen: check a link, some selected text, an image, a region of the screen, or a file (image, PDF or .eml email) yourself, from the side panel or the right-click menu. You can also scan the page you are on.
- Magic Mouse (optional): hover over a message to see scam signals, worked out on your device. Click to ask Carmen for a verdict.
- Site blocking (optional, off by default): stops a page Carmen has already rated dangerous. You can still continue if you choose.
- Alerts: a browser notification, with an optional sound, when Carmen finds a likely scam. You choose which alerts you get.

YOUR DATA
- Content Carmen checks is sent to Backgrounder's service to produce a verdict (or to the Backgrounder account server your organization set up). It is kept under your account so you can review your verdicts and cases.
- If you turn on personal-detail removal, Carmen removes common personal details such as email addresses, phone numbers, and card and bank numbers from the messages it picks up by itself, including the earlier messages of the thread, before they leave your browser. Links, business email domains and toll-free numbers are kept as scam evidence. It is best-effort, and it does not apply to anything you send yourself (Ask Carmen, scans, images or files). Setup preselects sending the full message; you can choose removal instead, or sending only who a message is from and when it arrived.
- Diagnostic records (optional, off by default): if you turn on "Share diagnostic records", Carmen sends records about its own checks, such as which step a check reached and the address that was checked. These records contain no message text, page content or files.
- No advertising, no selling of data, and no third-party analytics or tracking code.
- Carmen reaches sites beyond the ones listed above only if you grant optional access, which it asks for only when you press a control that needs it: Magic Mouse on all sites, screenshots and region snip, or Scan page from the side panel. You can revoke it at any time.
